There once was a very sad little W. You'd think he would've been happy, as he had 25 brothers and sisters - all the letters of the alphabet!! And besides that, many children loved him as well!
But his favorite little girl, a very beautiful little girl named Eilish, would not say his name, even though her Mother had tried very hard to get her to. Oh, how he longed to be special to Eilish - just to hear her say his name one time!!! Or even to know that she enjoyed his sound. He sometimes felt so sad that he turned upsidedown and pretended he was an M, hoping Eilish would love him that way.
All the other letters laughed at him when he did that. But then they quieted down and expressed love and pity for him from their hearts. Eilish had already said A B C D E and F, along with G H I J and K. she had even said L M N O P several times. Q R S T U and V were not left out and even X Y and Z had heard their names said by this beautiful Eilish - all except the sad little W.
He continued to love her anyway just wishing she would look at him and love him enough to say his name. He thought maybe if he made up some very silly words or poems that Eilish might want to say his name.
At first, he wasn't very brave, and just wrote down something he had heard somewhere before:
"How much Wood Would a Woodchuck chuck,
if a Wood chuck could chuck Wood?!"
Then he got a little more creative and wrote something strange:
"A Weird and Wooly Wind whipped by
With W's Whirling through the sky."
Then he tried something funny, hoping to make her laugh:
"I Went to Work With a man named Why,(He thought maybe he had been a little TOO clever here - after all, she was only almost 5!!)
Who Would say "because" if you called the guy."
So he tried something silly -
"Willie Whistled Wetly into Wanda's ear,
Which made her Want to Wildly Whack him right upon his rear!"
After all that, and she still didn't say "W" even once, he grew very thoughtful. He wrote this little poem to Eilish:
"What a Wonderful World it Would be
if Eilish would notice me.
My Wildest Wish Would then come true
if sweet Eilish said "W"!!!"
He thought that this last thing was quite a masterpiece and was very proud of it, as he had poured his heart into it for Eilish. When Eilish heard all the things the W had written for her and saw how very sad he was, and saw how hard he had tried to make her laugh and to show her his love, she paid more attention to him.
She felt sorry for him and loved him and tried hard to say his name, even though it was much longer than all the other letters' names. this made the little W leap about with great joy, which also made him look very silly! That really made Eilish laugh! Finally one day she loved him so much that she worked extra hard and her sweet voice said "W" clear as a bell! The little W had never known such happiness and the other letters all clapped their hands too! And Eilish did a little dance with the W, who was never sad anymore! :)
